1/ D'UN ÉVÉNEMENT PRÉVISIBLE, 2/ D'UNE RÉACTION INÉVITABLE

1 - EXPRESSION D'UN ÉVÉNEMENT PRÉVISIBLE AVEC CERTITUDE

L'auxiliaire de modalité will (parfois accompagné de certainly ou encore de always ou de automatically) peut servir à un exprimer un événement prévisible avec certitude :

- Dirt in the lubricant will cause loss of performance : La présence de saletés dans le lubrifiant fera/fait baisser le rendement

- Striking the spindle, even a light blow, will certainly damage the bearings : Donner ne serait-ce qu'un léger coup à la broche endommagera sûrement les roulements (autre trad. : ne manquera pas d'endommager ...)

- Pressing the Escape key will always cancel the current operation : Le fait d'appuyer sur la touche d'échappement annulera/annule toujours l'opération en cours

- Clicking on an application will automatically load and run it : Le fait de cliquer sur une application la chargera/charge en mémoire et la lancera/lance automatiquement

La traduction française se fait au moyen d'un futur simple ou d'un présent simple.

2 - EXPRESSION D'UNE RÉACTION INÉVITABLE, D'UN COMPORTEMENT TYPIQUE

Will s'emploie en particulier dans une proposition principale qui exprime une réaction inévitable, un comportement typique ou habituel et à laquelle est articulée une proposition subordonnée introduite par if, unless, when, whenever, each/every time, as soon as, etc., dont le verbe est au présent simple :

- The beam will break if it is subjected to a heavy load : La poutre se brise si on la soumet à une lourde charge (ou encore : se brisera ...)

- The engine will not run efficiently unless the correct fuel is used : Le moteur n'a un rendement efficace que si l'on emploie le carburant voulu (ou encore : n'aura ...)

- The tape will move rapidly forward when the Fast Forward button is pressed : La bande défile à grande vitesse vers l'avant quand la touche d'avance rapide est enclenchée (ou encore : défilera ... quand la touche ... sera enclenchée)

- Whenever you press the F1 key, PC Shell will provide you with the appropriate help screen for the current task : Chaque fois que vous appuyez sur la touche (de fonction) F1, (le programme) PC Shell vous fournit l'écran d'aide correspondant à la tâche en cours (ou encore : vous appuierez ... PC Shell vous fournira ...)

- Each time the BRIL touchpad is pressed, the level of illumination will change in the following sequence: dim, medium, medium-bright, and bright : À chaque nouvelle pression sur la touche marquée BRIL, le niveau de luminosité prend, dans l'ordre, une des valeurs suivantes : faible, moyen, moyen-élevé, élevé (ou encore : prendra ...)

- As soon as the shutter trips, the film will automatically move into position for the next shot : Dès que l'obturateur se déclenche, la pellicule s'avance automatiquement pour la prise suivante (ou encore : se déclenchera, la pellicule s'avancera ...)

On rapprochera de ce type de schéma les deux phrases suivantes qui combinent,

a/ la première, une proposition commençant par un impératif affirmatif à une proposition introduite par and :

- Press the POWER button on the lower left of the display unit, and the ON LED will light up : Appuyez sur le bouton de mise sous tension à gauche et en bas de l'unité de visualisation et la DEL de marche s'allumera (= If you press the POWER button ..., the ON LED will light up)
[LED = light-emitting diode : diode électroluminescente ou DEL]

b/ la seconde, une proposition commençant par un impératif négatif à une proposition introduite par or :

- Do not exceed 120 C when heating a bearing or its hardness will be affected : Ne dépassez pas 120 Celsius en chauffant un roulement sinon sa résistance en sera affectée (= If you exceed 120 C when heating a bearing, its hardness will be affected)

APPLICATION 1

Combiner l'une des propositions principales comportant l'auxiliaire will à l'une des propositions subordonnées par if, de façon à former une phrase complète ayant un sens.

Principales

1/ Pumps having cast-iron components will rust

2/ A higher quality of recording and reproduction will be available

3/ The flash unit will not function

4/ Priming will be instantaneous upon start-up

5/ The current operation will always be cancelled

Subordonnées

A/ if the batteries are not installed properly.

B/ if the pump is installed with a positive head on the inlet.

C/ if stood for periods longer than 2 weeks.

D/ if you press the Escape key.

E/ if the proper cleaning procedure is followed.
