L'expression du moyen avec by + forme verbale en -ing

L'EXPRESSION DU MOYEN AVEC BY + FORME VERBALE EN -ING

1 - BY + GÉRONDIF

La proposition subordonnée gérondive introduite par by + gérondif est la façon la plus courante d'exprimer le moyen :

- Ford's goal is to reduce to eight hours the time it takes to test prototypes by simulating them on a Cray supercomputer :
Le but de Ford est de ramener à huit heures le temps nécessaire pour mettre à l'essai les prototypes en simulant ceux-ci sur un superordinateur Cray

La traduction française utilise systématiquement en + forme en -ant.

By peut être suivi de deux gérondifs coordonnés (voire de plusieurs) :

- General Motors is to get a better return on its capital investment by running its Lordstown (Ohio) assembly plant full-tilt and redesigning cars for more efficient manufacturing :
General Motors envisage d'obtenir une meilleure rentabilité de ses investissements en capitaux en faisant tourner à plein régime son usine d'assemblage de Lordstown dans l'Ohio et en remettant ses voitures sur la planche à dessiner en vue d'une fabrication plus efficace

La proposition subordonnée gérondive ne suit pas obligatoirement la proposition principale; elle peut être placée en tête de phrase dans une intention de mise en relief :

- By changing the sludge cartridges, the centrifuge can be emptied quickly and simply :
En changeant les cartouches-filtres, on peut vidanger la centrifugeuse en toute rapidité et simplicité

Le gérondif peut être modifié par un adverbe :

- In Prolog, you arrive at solutions by logically inferring one thing from something already known :
Avec le langage Prolog, on résoud un problème en déduisant logiquement une chose d'une autre déjà connue

By + gérondif se rencontre dans l'expression toute faite This is done/achieved/performed by + gér. (On fait / obtient / réalise cela en + forme en -ant) :

- This is done by placing insulation barriers between the electrical and mechanical components :
On procède en plaçant des écrans isolants entre les composants électriques et les composants mécaniques

2 - BY + NOM VERBAL

Il arrive que by soit suivi non pas d'un gérondif mais d'un nom verbal; on a alors un complément de moyen et non plus une proposition gérondive :

- The gold-plated surfaces of the watch can be kept in good condition by regular wiping with a damp soft cloth :
On peut garder en bon état les surfaces plaquées or de la montre en les essuyant régulièrement avec un chiffon doux et humide

On reconnait le nom verbal wiping au fait qu'il est précédé d'un adjectif épithète (regular).

3 - REMARQUE

Gérondif et nom verbal précédés de by, proposition gérondive et complément de moyen, peuvent coexister dans une même phrase, à la suite d'un seul et même verbe :

- The OS9/68000 system interface gives the possibility of creating tasks which can communicate by sending and receiving signals or by message sending through pipes :
L'interface du système d'exploitation OS9/68000 offre la possibilité de créer des tâches qui peuvent communiquer entre elles en envoyant ou en recevant des signaux ou par l'envoi de messages via des canaux de communication

On reconnaît le nom verbal sending au fait qu'il forme un nom composé avec message (message sending : envoi de messages).

APPLICATION 1

Compléter chacune des phrases à l'aide de la construction en by + gérondif qui convient.

Constructions à employer : by entering - by placing - by pointing and clicking (en pointant et en cliquant) - by pushing - by removing (en enlevant)
