Recalled plane engine at risk of ‘total power loss’

1  About 40 aircraft across Australia have been grounded after a worldwide recall on a faulty type of engine.  The Lycoming TIO-540 and LTIO-540 engines, which can be fitted to Piper Chieftains, Navajos, Saratogas, Aerostars, Malibu Mirages, Mojaves and the Cessna 206, have been recalled after reports of broken crankshafts.

2  The Whyalla Airlines plane which crashed in the Spencer Gulf in South Australia in May 2000, killing eight people, was a Piper Chieftain. Investigators isolated a fractured crankshaft in the aircraft’s left engine as one of the causes of the crash. But a spokesman for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau could not say whether the Whyalla aircraft had carried an engine of the type named in yesterday’s recall.

3  A civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) spokesman said that while there were 220 planes in Australia that could be fitted with the engine, the recall was expected to cover only about 40.

4  The US Federal Aviation Administration put out an emergency airworthiness directive on Friday, banning further flight until the problem crankshafts were replaced. The FAA noted that flight with a faulty engine could result in “total engine power loss, inflight engine failure and possible forced landing”.

5  CASA issued its own directive grounding the aircraft yesterday, a day after receiving notification of the US ban. CASA gave owners five hours of flying time to take their aircraft to a maintenance workshop where the engine could be removed. Owners of the aircraft included flying schools, regional airlines, charter firms and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, a CASA spokesman said.

6  The engines must be returned to the US for repairs, where Lycoming will inspect them and replace any faulty crankshafts. About 900 engines worldwide are thought to fall under the replacement order, and authorities expect it will take months before all the aircraft are back in the air.
