Le terme bearing, formé sur le verbe to bear, « porter », « supporter », a le sens de « support », d'« appui ». En mécanique, bearing peut désigner aussi bien un « palier, un « coussinet » qu'un « roulement ». Dans ce dernier sens, bearing est mis pour rolling bearing ou rolling-element bearing.
